Obituary of Albert Helwig
Please share a memory of Albert to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Albert Helwig, 86, of Syracuse, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on March 26, 2022, after a long battle with cancer. His greatest concern was for his family as the time of his death drew near. Al was active in the Boy Scouts and was a troop leader in Webelos. He enlisted in the US Air Force with assignments at air bases, in the U.S. and in Iceland. Al was invited to be a member of the Wing at Andrews AFB that took care of the President and Vice President's planes. Al was a member of the supply group for the Vice President's plane. This assignment brought him and other Air Men the honor of meeting then-President Lyndon Johnson at the White House. After his service at Andrews Air Force Base he went on to work at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome, NY, until his retirement in 1975.
He is survived by his wife after 59 years of marriage, Vera, and 2 sons, William and George, as well as family in New Jersey. Per Al's wishes, the funeral will be for the immediate family only.
Anyone wishing to donate in his memory are asked to consider the Outreach Program, Ss. Peter and Paul Orthodox Church, 401 Hamilton St., Syracuse 13204.
