Obituary of Maria Omelian

Maria Omelian, 94, of Camillus, passed away Saturday, August 4, 2018 at the Iroquois Nursing & Rehabilitation Center surrounded by her loving family. Mrs. Omelian was born on October 12, 1923 in Kiewshovata, Ukraine. As a child, she survived the Holodomor and then at the age of 18 she was used as forced labor during the war years in German held territory. Afterwards, she was in various Displaced Persons (DP) camps in Germany where she met her future husband. George Omelian. Together they were placed in another DP camp in Weisbaden, Germany where they had a son Anatoli. In 1949, she and her husband and son immigrated to the United States and in 1952 finally settling in the Syracuse area. For many years they operated a poultry farm in Jordan, NY and finally moved to Camillus in 1970 where she lived for the rest of her life. Maria was a devoted mother and extremely proud of her son, Anatoli and loved her daughter in law Pam very much. She was a life long member and one of the founders of St. Luke's Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Syracuse. Maria was also the Past President of the St. Olga's Sisterhood and helped in creating the highly successful Christmas and Easter Perogi and Bake Sales.

Maria was predeceased by her husband, George who died in 1979, her mother & father, Nadia & Iwan Zadorozshnyj, her brother, Mykola and her niece, Luda.

Survivors: her son and daughter-in-law, Anatoli (Tony) and Pamela (Trump) Omelian and several nieces and nephews, Natalka, Seroja, Marina, Vika and Masha of Ukraine.

Calling hours will be held Wednesday, August 8, 2018 from 4-7 PM at St. Luke's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, 3290 Warners Rd., Warners NY. Immediately following the calling hours there will be a Panakhyda and Church Service. Mrs. Omelian will be laid to rest Thursday, August 9th at 1:00 PM at St. Andrew's Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery in South Bound Brook, New Jersey.
